The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION
Coming off its successful Grammy-nominated recording ?Tribute? on the Artistry CD (MAMA Label), which featured the artistic spirit of Stan Kenton, The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra will make its downtown Los Angeles premiere at the Bluewhale Live Jazz Club located in Little Tokyo on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, performing two shows; 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra will debut three new major compositions by leader/composer Kim Richmond; Adjustments, Sleepless (a commission), and Twixt. These new works are blazing a new direction for the Orchestra by combining its style of symphonic orchestrations with the element of freedom with a ?jazz state of mind.?

The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra was formed to provide a workshop for major concert works that include elements of both large ensemble jazz with free-swinging improvisation and symphonic colors and textures. This is truly an orchestra rather than simply a jazz band.

The expanded instrumentation which contributes to the symphonic nature of the orchestra includes five woodwinds playing saxophones, flutes, clarinets and double reeds (oboe, English horn and bassoon); four trumpets; two French horns; three tenor trombones, bass trombone and tuba; rhythm section of guitar, piano, bass, drums, mallet percussion and Latin percussion.

Artistry, the latest CD from The Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra was a tribute to legendary big band leader Stan Kenton and his Neophonic Orchestra combining the sounds of large ensemble jazz with symphonic colors and textures and free-swinging improvisation and paid homage to ?Kentonesque? jazz and Latin-style compositions, the size and scope of the master?s kinetic orchestration, rightfully known to music historians as the original ?Wall of Sound.?

Besides writing the bulk of the material, leader Kim Richmond is featured as jazz alto and soprano saxophone soloist as well as conductor.
