So What! The Artistry of Miles Davis
DESCRIPTION
This exhibit of archival recordings, magazine articles, concert posters, original photographs, and a significant discography covers the life, work, and innovation of jazz master Miles Davis across eras from bebop and the birth of cool to electric experimentation and beyond. A creative innovator, Miles Davis is an improviser and composer, a painter and master practitioner of the trumpet?a true artist whose work both mutated and evolved with the times to influence multiple genres, from jazz to funk to hip-hop to rock and roll. The materials exhibited are primarily drawn from the significant Alden Kimbrough Collection which has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. These include a discography of over 107 LPs, as well as 15 78s and 8 33s. There are also selected items from the collection of Billie Green as well as artwork by Ramsess, Norm Maxwell, and ShirtKingFade. Portrait murals by AISE and Patrick H. Johnson individually, and walls designed by the show?s curator, Ami Motevalli, create an immersive environment for the archival display. The life and work of Miles Davis is the focus for The William Grant Still Arts Center?s 8th Annual African-American Composers Series.

ZUZA & CLARICE CAST
DESCRIPTION

may 7th

Zuza is blowing through Los Angeles for less than a week! This evening's performance is the only performance here and will be terrifically special. He'll be playing guitar and singing, playing with the wonderful Clarice Cast on percussion! Perfect for the intimacy of Bar Fedora!

Zuza's performance will mix Brazilian songs, vocal improvisation, body percussion and live looping in a shared interactive experience that brings a taste of Brazilian Music and S?o Paulo's Body Music scene as a catalyst for new and unexpected connections.

Zuza Gon?alves has been studying and developing alternative approaches to vocal music in educational and performance settings since 2001, bringing together elements from practices such as vocal improvisation, circle-songs, body percussion, Brazilian songs, choral music, and elements from his personal physical practices (DeRose Method, physical theater, Brazilian traditional dances).

A graduate of UNESP Art's Institute (musical conducting and composition), he has participated three times in the Circlesongs Workshop with Bobby Mcferrin (being invited to lead sessions on Body Music), he facilitated a workshop for educators at Carnegie Hall (NY) and has more than 10 years of experience as a teaching artists in many different contexts.

Devotion to the King of Pop
DESCRIPTION
Devotion to the King of Pop

On Labor Day 2009, artist B.J.Diggs began drawing one picture a day of Michael Jackson. She continued for 14 months finally producing beautiful colored pencil sketches of the King of Pop. Her goal: ?to create drawings that capture MJ?s heart and energy, to open my heart and use my gifts to the best of my ability. I found that he is my inspiration both visually and as a human. I vowed to never forget him and this is my way of honoring that vow!? She will display over 30 pieces of original artwork at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, in Pasadena, CA on May 8th, 2016 in the Arts and Crafts section.
10% of proceeds will be donated to the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF).

Straight from his brilliant turn as Elder Cunningham in "The Book Of Mormon", Jared Gertner stars as 1930s lyricist Al Dubin in a show that delivers a veritable banquet of marvelous, toe-tapping tunes. Dubin was one of the premier songwriters of Hollywood's Golden Age. Possessed of enormous talent and equally outsized vices, he still managed to create such classics as Lullaby of Broadway, 42nd Street, We're In The Money and Tiptoe Through the Tulips.

Directed and choreographed by Broadway veteran Kay Cole, and written by the award-winning screenwriters of "Peggy Sue Got Married", the show features portrayals of such celebrated personalities as Al Jolson, Cab Calloway, Ruby Keeler, Carmen Miranda, and Busby Berkeley. The only question is which of the twenty-one songs you'll wind up humming on the way out.

Limited engagement, not to be missed!

Tim Weisberg
DESCRIPTION
Famed flutist Tim Weisberg will perform with his Band for DVAC?s Special Presentation of Wine Art and Jazz Night, May 15th 2016, at the Diamond Valley Arts Council?s Diamond Valley Arts Center, located at 123 N. Harvard St., Hemet Ca 92543. Doors open at 6:45pm with the show starting at 7:00pm. Admission ranges from $25 to $45. Tickets may be ordered ONLINE at the DVAC website (www.thedvac.org), through PurplePass (www.purplepass.com) or by stopping by the Art Center Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm.
Anyone attending his concerts at the famed Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, Dizzy's in San Diego, or catching his current club appearances, will agree: legendary flutist Tim Weisberg continues to joyfully satisfy audiences' thirst for a distinctive mix of Rock and Pop served with a twist of Jazz.
Though he opened the Monterey Jazz Festival as a grad student in 1970, Tim was "eating the forbidden fruit of rock n' roll," as he puts it. With his passion for multi-genre music, including Funk and R&B, it wasn't long before he was sharing the stage with the likes of Jefferson Starship, Frank Zappa and Bruce Springsteen. Soon his unique musicianship was heard on a wide range of albums, paired with performers from The Carpenters to Dave Mason. Meanwhile, his first solo album, released on A&M in 1971, triumphed with an innovative sound of rock-jazz-pop fusion that promptly turned him into an industry pioneer.
Tim had released eight albums of his own by the time he teamed with the late Dan Fogelberg on the 1978 hit album, "Twin Sons Of Different Mothers." When this collaboration quickly went platinum, Tim's virtuosity was indelibly stamped on the world music map. Tim?s new album "Another Byte," is available on I Tunes, in Stores and from www.timweisberg.com .
Long regarded as forerunners of the jam band culture, Tim and his bands played to crowds in some of rock's most notable venues. Now, as long-standing fans flock to hear him, a new wave of enthusiasts has emerged. In an era of unrivaled musical diversity, they appreciate the artistry of a true original who performs a full spectrum of exuberant fusion that rocks, rolls and resounds.
Some of the top venues where Tim has performed: Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado; Greek Theatre, Los Angeles; The Troubadour, Los Angeles; Monterey Jazz Festival; Catalina Jazz Festival; ldyllwild Jazz in the Pines Festival; Merriweather Post Pavilion, Maryland; The Barns at Wolf Trap, Virginia; Orchestra Hall, Boston; Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis.
WINE ART AND JAZZ is a fundraiser for The DVAC and its programs. Guests receive two glasses of wine or other beverage, light appetizers and access to the current gallery exhibition as well as the concert. Doors open for General Admission at 6:45 pm with the concert beginning at 7:00 pm.

Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band
If music were about pictures, percussionist Poncho Sanchez?s music would best be described as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz, swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than dazzling. Sanchez grew up in a suburb of L.A., where he was raised on an unusual cross section of sounds that included straightahead jazz, Latin jazz and American soul. By his teen years, his musical consciousness had been solidified by the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Wilson Pickett and James Brown. Whatever the genre, the mesmerizing array of sounds and colors from Poncho Sanchez?s youth have telegraphed across the decades and continue to inform his creative sensibilities to this day. His over 20 year relationship with Concord Records has yielded two dozen recordings, a Grammy Award and several Grammy nominations
