I BUILD THE TOWER screening and panel discussion
DESCRIPTION
50th Anniversary of Watts Riots ? Screening and Panel Discussion
I BUILD THE TOWER
In collaboration with the Watts Towers Arts Center, the International Documentary Association and the Italian Cultural Institute, the Cinematheque presents a unique opportunity to better understand the recent violence underscoring the continuing practice of inequality in our country. Join us for a screening of I BUILD THE TOWER, Edward Landler and Brad Byer?s definitive documentary feature on the Watts Towers and their creator, Sabato Rodia. Made with exclusive access to Rodia?s family and the cooperation of the Watts community, the film follows Rodia?s life through the creation of his monumental mosaic-covered spires and their recognition as an architectural and sculptural masterpiece.
I BUILD THE TOWER also tells the story of Watts. Showing this story as Rodia saw it over the 30 years of his work on the towers, the film details the growth of the conditions that led to the violence of 1965 - and to Watts embracing the Watts Towers as a symbol of freedom and initiative.
Following the screening, panelists with perspectives drawn from long-term experience with Watts and the Watts Towers will address the issues raised in the film still influencing our society today.
Panelists include:
Ben Caldwell ? Filmmaker, founder of the Kaos Network, community multimedia training and arts center in South Los Angeles
Charles Dickson ? Sculptor, community activist, Artist-in-Residence at the Watts Towers Arts Center
Luisa Del Giudice ? Oral historian and ethnographer; founder, the Watts Towers Common Ground Initiative; director, Italian Oral History Institute; editor of Sabato Rodia?s Towers in Watts
Gerald Horne ? Historian, professor, University of Houston, author of Fire This Time: The Watts Uprising and the 1960s
Edward Landler ? Writer, media educator and filmmaker, I BUILD THE TOWER
Ojenke ? Poet and a founding member of the Watts Writers Workshop
Judson Powell ? Artist, co-founding director of Watts Towers Arts Center (1964), creator of the Heart of Watts Project
Moderator ? Rosie Lee Hooks ? Actor, singer, filmmaker, current director of the Watts Towers Arts Center

Brazilian and Flamenco Jazz at the Blue Whale
DESCRIPTION
The Blue Whale presents a double set of world-class Jazz and Flamenco Jazz, featuring the award-winning pianist Danny Green with bassist Justin Grinnell and drummer Julien Cantelm with special guest saxophonist from NYC, Arun Luthra. They share the bill with flutist Rebecca Kleinmann?s stunning new collaboration with world- renowned flamenco guitarist Jason McGuire?s Trio with percussionist Marlon Aldana and bassist Paul Martin Sounder.

Hailed as ?one of the important up-and-comers on the scene today? by All About Jazz, Green is one of the most prolific and talented jazz pianists in Southern California, and has received Best Jazz Album at the San Diego Music Awards and awarded a music residency at the San Diego Museum of Art.

Arun Luthra has been one of the premiere saxophonists and composers on New York?s jazz scene for well over a decade. He is one of the small group of American jazz musicians of Indian heritage who have continued to explore to possibilities of fusing the modern post-bop sound with elements of Indian classical music, as well drawing from a wide variety of modern and classic musical influences to create a vibrant new sound and style.

Internationally acclaimed flutist and singer Rebecca Kleinmann has steeped her natural musicality in the waters of Brazilian Music, Jazz and Flamenco, and honors these traditions while emerging with her own voice. On this California tour she combines forces with the unparalleled virtuosic talent of flamenco guitarist Jason McGuire along with the grooving subtleties of drummer and percussionist Marlon Aldana and bassist Paul Martin Sounder. The Jason McGuire Trio joined by versatile Kleinmann will feature original music by McGuire and Kleinmann along with music of composers such as Hermeto Pascoal. The agility, depth, playfulness and precision of the group are a captivating joy to witness.

9th Annual SCSJPA "Schools Got Class" Golf Tournament

The Southern California Schools Joint Powers Authorities (SCSJPA) is comprised of two non-profit joint powers authorities. We are happy to announce the 9th Annual SCSJPA Golf Tournament, to support Safe Schools Ambassadors (SSA) program! This year's funds will go to sponsor eligible schools interested in participating in the Safe Schools Ambassadors program, offered through Community Matters, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, headquartered in Sonoma County, California. As the nation's most effective bystander education program that harnesses the power of students to prevent and stop bullying and violence, the Safe Schools Ambassadors program is an "inside-out" approach to improving schools climate relying on social crime. Since 2000, this field-tested evidence-based model has equipped nearly 60,000 students across our nation with the communication and intervention skills to prevent and stop emotional and physical bullying.

We are grateful for your support and welcome new sponsors and our continuing vendor partners to help make this year's fundraising event even more successful than past events. Your generous support is appreciated.

3rd annual M7 Con is riding into Los Angeles, California October 23 and 24, 2015 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. All staff members have mounted their horses and headed out on their journey to plan the best M7 Con fans will experience. While heading into our third year, we are keeping the event a two day Con in order to expand out to other Western panelists and possible actors. We want our audience, new members and veteran members, to get their money?s worth and from the looks of the initial plans that will definitely be the case. If we do get more actors and/or panelists the Con may be extended.
M7 Con, in the past two years, has brought to its fans amazing panelists that have shared their in-depth knowledge of things from the Old West and the television series. M7 Con has also brought lifetime chances to fans to meet actors from the M7 series; such as Rick Worthy, Anthony Starke, Dale Midkiff, Andrew Kavovit and guest star Daren Flam. During our inaugural year we had series executive producer and writer, Pen Densham on site as well. Each year, we as a staff, strive to bring the audience bigger and better experiences.
While our actors and panelists line-up has just begun initial planning, M7 Con has extended an open invitation to new and past actors and panelists. We will be expanding into different areas of the Western genre and the history surrounding the Old West this year. We want to give the audience an experience of a lifetime and for them to want to return year after year. M7 Con was started by fans for fans and we hold that to a very high regard.
We are still in the early planning stages but along with the actors? main panel, this year will also feature a variety of Old West expert guest panelists, autograph and photo ops, various vendors and special events.
We hope to have a full house on October 23 & 24, 2015 and that each guest has a magnificent time.
*If you have a business or company that would like more information about our vendor and/or sponsorship opportunities please contact Amy at svc@m7con.org
