NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) Canadian Film Festival - July 28th, 2018
DESCRIPTION
NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) presents three programs of Canadian short films, co-hosted by the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles and Telefilm Canada and sponsored by Seneca College. Community Collaborators include the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Writers Guild of Canada, UBCP / ACTRA and more.

The films represent a mix of drama, comedy, thriller, horror, new media and documentary, and include alumni from TIFF 2017, award winners from top-tier festivals, and first time filmmakers alike.

The first program of the evening presents a mix of existentialism and comedy, with stories that explore the self and our connection with others (or lack thereof).

The next program prominently features family relationships and looking at the world through new eyes, either through those of a child or through those of someone whose life has been indelibly changed.

The final program of the night gets our adrenaline up, with action, laughter and music, while also challenging us to tackle difficult issues.

Tickets are only $5 for single film programs and $15 for all films with open bar for 7+ hours! Get them now before it is too late!

EVENT
NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) Film Festival - August 25th, 2018
DESCRIPTION
NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) spotlights stories from Developing Nations and a selection of works by emerging local and US filmmakers, in partnership with the film commissioners’ association Film Liaisons In California Statewide (FLICS).

The night begins with a powerful shorts program highlighting stories set in or about communities from developing nations, made by filmmakers who are either local to or intimately familiar with those communities. The themes in this program span the collision of worlds and cultures, the evolution of family dynamics, and the powerful bond between humans and the natural world.

Second in the night is Lonely Hearts Club, the feature directorial debut of award-winning director and NFMLA alumni Jason O. Silva. Three lives converge in this exploration of love and loss during a long flight layover in Los Angeles, starring Camille Guaty (Daytime Divas, Scorpion, Las Vegas)

The evening concludes with a shorts program offering a selection of surreal and comedic films that bring their own takes to topics including heartbreak, xenophobia and superstition, challenging us to look at them with fresh eyes.

Tickets are only $5 for single film programs and $15 for all films with open bar for 7+ hours! Get them now before it is too late!

Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra Holiday
DESCRIPTION
Get in the spirit of the festive holiday season as the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra fills the concert hall with the sounds of wailing trumpets and toe-tapping rhythms in a swingin’ evening of holiday favorites and beloved standards.

John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Jeff Clayton founded the CHJO in 1986. The two young men, John and Jeff Hamilton, had played together with Monty Alexander then gone their separate ways, reuniting in Los Angeles to found the band. Brother Jeff Clayton, who had been living and working in Los Angeles all along, came on board to help put the band together. John explains, “He knew all the best players in the city and how compatible they were musically and personality-wise.”

It’s all about the music and the camaraderie. In addition to technical instrumental prowess and excellent jazzmanship, the primary criteria for choosing band members is dedication. The love of the music and the love of the ‘band-family’ must be the motivation and anyone who thinks this is just a gig need not apply. A number of renowned jazz artists have been a part of this musical family including George Bohanon, Oscar Brashear, Bobby Bryant, Al McKibbon, Charles Owens, Andy Simpkins, Gerald Wiggins, Ricky Woodard, and Snooky Young.
