Miles Perlich
United Groove

The musical roots run deep in Miles Perlich's family. Father Martin Perlich (formerly Program Director and Afternoon Host at KCSN 88.5 FM Northridge) was host of the groundbreaking eclectic radio show "The Perlich Project? which aired on WCLV fm Cleveland in the early 60's, and on ?Progressive? rocker KMET in Los Angels, before going on to Co-produce ?The Midnight Special? on NBC-TV. Grandfather Hyman Schandler was Principal Second Violinist in the Cleveland Orchestra under George Szell, as well as founder and Music Director of the Cleveland Womens Symphony for over 50 years.

But it was Josť Rizo's "Jazz on the Latin Side" that has had the deepest impact on Miles' life. "A good friend of mine hipped me to Josť's show over ten years ago, and I've been listening and learning ever since" says Perlich with a sly grin. Miles got so excited listening to the sounds of Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Cal Tjader, that he felt compelled to share his newfound joy with the entire student body of Santa Monica College, where he was studying Spanish and broadcasting. In 1996, Perlich started his own Latin jazz show "Spanish Grease" on KWRF Santa Monica College, then in 1999 he brought his unique mix to 90.7fm KPFK Los Angeles.

Leaving KPFK after a year, Miles became active in compiling and reissuing classic Latin Jazz for both the Rhino and Blue Note labels, and still hopes to unearth more lost treasures from the vaults. One of Miles' biggest moments came in 2002 when Josť Rizo asked him to fill in on ?Jazz on the Latin Side?. After listening to his favorite program for over 10 years, it was the greatest honor to actually host it! Since then, Miles has been a regular fill-in for Josť Rizo and others at KJazz.
